When your Dad calls you up to invite you for gyros at a Greek restaurant he has just discovered, you can’t help but get uber excited at the prospect of fresh tzatziki, warmed pita bread and most of all gyros. Nothing beats it.
Souvlaki City is a modern and authentic Greek restaurant based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Souvlaki City has a varied menu featuring meze, traditional Greek dishes and, the star of the show, gyros.
We started with tzatziki and pita bread (with olives) which were absolutely delicious. I would eat tzatziki with every single meal if it was socially acceptable to face the world with garlic breath 24/7. This tzatziki was the perfect balance of creamy and garlicy. I couldn’t get enough of it.
And the pita bread? It was beautifully flavoured with oregano and salt. Gorgeous.
We also shared two cheese starters (between the four of us). Saganaki, which is pan-seared kefalotyri cheese and baked feta cheese.
Both were tasty but the saganaki was unbeatable. We’d eaten it before I even had a chance to photograph it.
For our mains, we all opted for either a gyros plate or a gyros wrap. And my word, it was truly scrumptious. With the Greek music playing and the relaxed atmosphere, if I closed my eyes, I could almost pretend that I was in Athens, it was that good.
And the best thing about it? St Albans is just around the corner. A 20 minute drive and I can be eating the real deal.
Yep you’ve guessed it, Souvlaki City is going to become a regular spot. Birthdays, Sunday lunches and everything in between.
If you’re ever in the area, then I would highly recommend you give it a try for yourself.
With its fast and friendly service, stylish interior and mouth-watering food, what’s not to love?
