Cushion foundations have become a bit of trend within the beauty world over the last year or so and they are increasingly filtering through to the high street (we’re even seeing the launch of cushion bronzers and blushers).
When I first heard about them I thought they were a bit of a gimmick. Why would I possibly need a compact loaded with a sponge soaked in foundation?
I’ve always been a high coverage foundation kind of girl, so I didn’t think it would tick the boxes as cushion foundations are generally known for their light weight formulation.
However, a couple of months ago I was perusing the aisles of Superdrug while they had a 3 for 2 promotion and I ended up picking up one such cushion foundation on a bit of a whim. I swatched a couple of shades and I was instantly sucked in because I found a perfect match for my skintone – which never happens!
The foundation in question is the Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation. It is described as “Flawless, fresh faced perfection! Experience our next generation cushion foundation. On-the-go cushion compact allows you to refresh your look throughout the day with effortless medium coverage in a convenient compact”.
The Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation is housed in a chunky compact with a double lid containing a mirror and applicator sponge. The second lid within the compact reveals the sponge-like cushion saturated in foundation.
This second lid is designed to keep the cushion fresh and secure, and in two months of using this foundation I haven’t had any issues with the foundation drying out.
I like to apply this foundation by pressing my makeup sponge into the foundation sponge and applying it directly to my skin.
Honestly, I haven’t tried the applicator that comes with the Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation as I’m just too attached to my makeup sponge, so I can’t comment on its effectiveness.
But with my go to makeup sponge? application is super quick and easy. The formula itself feels creamy but lightweight on the skin, which has been so comfortable to wear during our hot and sticky summer weather.
The coverage has also really impressed me, especially as it is so buildable. But what I like most about this foundation is that it creates a very flattering, natural, even finish and I think this is partly because the shade matches my skintone so perfectly.
Being a slightly lighter formulation then the foundations I tend to go for, this does start to fade after a full day of wear but it fades evenly which is a massive bonus. Having said that, this product is MADE for touching up on the go so it is no trouble at all reapplying a bit more if I need it to last me throughout the evening too.
I’ve been reaching for the Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation pretty much daily, as it’s ideal for work and running errands on the weekend, where I want to look put together but don’t want to necessarily spend ages getting ready. It really is so convenient.
The Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation comes in 8 shades and costs £13.99. The shade range is limited but as I’ve found my perfect shade I can’t complain, it’s just something to bare in mind if you’re looking to try this foundation for yourself.
The Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation is also more expensive than the high street foundations I tend to purchase time and time again, but this is so worth the extra couple of pounds even if you are getting less product.
I find that this still lasts me a good 6 weeks as I’m using less of it. Also a trick I’ve found for when it feels like it’s running out, I turn the cushion foundation over to the other side to use every last drop of product.
I’m basically a total convert, and I’m certainly intrigued to try more cushion products in the future.
