Me Before You by Jojo Moyes is the first book in a while that has really gripped me. If I’m honest I haven’t felt like reading for a good month or so, but when I was loaned this book and told I had to read it, I thought I should at least give it a try. For 3 days, all I wanted to do was read this book, I honestly could not put it down, I was captivated and I feel that I have this book to thank for my love of reading being restored. Summarising is not my strong point and I certainly don’t want to give too much away, so I’m going to try and be succinct.
“Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.
What Lou doesn’t know is she’s about to lose her job or that knowing what’s coming is what keeps her sane.
Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he’s going to put a stop to that.
What Will doesn’t know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.”
Please don’t be fooled by the cover of this book, Me Before You is not a classic romance novel, it is far more than that. Me Before You is a heartbreaking story with a difficult subject matter at its core. It is beautifully written and the characters are believably captivating. The pages of this book are filled with so much emotion – it made me laugh, cry, really really cry and everything in between. Me Before You took me on a journey that I didn’t want to end. I finished this book almost a week ago and I’m still thinking about it constantly, I have a feeling it will stay with me for a very long time.
Please read this book, you can thank me later. I’ll certainly be chasing down more of Jojo Moyes work.
